Please the Bees Projects

We’re currently working on several impactful projects across Gloucestershire, with one of our key initiatives based in Cheltenham. In collaboration with the local council and organizations like We Create Cheltenham, we’ve launched a 3-year project aimed at introducing honey bees along the Honeybourne Line. This project is designed to attract more wildlife and significantly increase the population of pollinator insects, contributing to a healthier local ecosystem.

As part of this initiative, we’ve secured a dedicated piece of community land to house beehives. On this site, we’ll be hosting open days where visitors can explore the fascinating world of honeybees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. We’re also running educational workshops and offering the chance for people to experience the therapeutic benefits of beekeeping. It’s not only an opportunity to learn about the essential role bees play in our environment but also a chance to engage with a calming, hands-on activity that brings people together.

We’re also excited about the possibility of collaborating with Clear Channel, who maintain bus stops, and the local council to raise awareness for the Please the Bees project. One of our innovative ideas is to create “bee stops”—living roofs installed on top of bus stops. These roofs would be made up of sedum mats, seeded with succulents and small plants with shallow root systems. Not only would they brighten up the town and make bus stops more attractive, but they would also serve as mini havens for pollinators like bees and butterflies, directly supporting the local ecosystem.

Additionally, we’ve established apiaries on a local farm and allotment, where our bees play a vital role in pollinating orchards and crops. These pollination efforts are essential for sustaining up to 75% of the most nutritious foods we eat. Our work supports both agricultural growth and the preservation of local biodiversity, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable food supply.
